Parshah Shelach 2025
This week’s Torah portion “Shelach,” means “send” and is found in Numbers 13:2. While the Hebrews were still in the wilderness, the L-rd told Moses to send out 12 men of distinction, one from each tribe, to scout the Land of Canaan, which the L-rd is giving to the children of Israel.
Forty days later the scouts returned reporting a lush and bountiful land. But 10 of the scouts were afraid as they described that the inhabitants of the land are giants and warriors that are “more powerful than we”. Only Caleb and Joshua insist that the land can be conquered, as G-d promised.
Due to the fear and disbelief of the 10 scouts, G‑d decreed that the Israelites’ entry into the Promised Land would be delayed 40 years, and the current generation of people would die in the desert. Many of the people weep and want to return to slavery in Egypt.
-
Why would G-d send “men of distinction/rulers” into Canaan?
-
Why would G-d delay the Israelites’ entry into the Promised Land for 40 years and allow a generation to die out due to fear and disbelief?
-
Does this story have any applicability for us today?
