Parshat Nitzavim-Vayelech 2024

This week is the double Torah portion Nitzavim and Vayelech. “Nitzavim.” Parshah Nitzavim, Deuteronomy 29:9, addresses the unity of all Isrealites regardless of age, gender, marital status, financial and social status, who “stand today” before the L‑rd their G‑d.”  Moses warns that we have free choice to follow the Torah, the mitzvot.  If we don’t, we will be scattered abroad while the land becomes desolate.  But, if we do choose to follow G-d’s ways, the mitzvot, we will return to the land and G-d will forgive us.

Parshah Vayelech, Deuteronomy 31:1, addresses how Moses can no longer lead the people due to his age and he transfers the leadership of the Isrealites to Joshua.  The shemittah cycle is explained as well as the gathering of people at the Holy Temple, in Jerusalem, where the king will read from the Torah.  This portion, like Nitzavim, prophesies that the people of Israel will turn away from their covenant with G‑d but they, and their descendants, will not forget the words of the Torah.

  • Why does this Torah portion fall right before the High Holidays?

  • Why do we start reciting the Selichot prayers during this Torah portion?  Is there some sort of relationship between them?

  • Please join us for tonight’s Shabbat service and let’s get into it!
