23 Aug Society of Jewish Science Kabbalat Shabbat 8/23/24 – 7pm
Parshat Eikev 2024
This week’s Torah portion, “Eikev,” means “because” and is found in Deuteronomy 7:12. Moses is continuing to review all that the Hebrews went through upon being delivered from slavery in Egypt but, here he is focusing on G-d’s promises of prosperity in the Promised Land if they adhere to the commandments (mitzvot) in the Torah.
Moses recounts the failings of the first generation freed from slavery in Egypt but also reminds them of G‑d’s forgiveness if they will return to Him. While the Promised Land is described as “flowing with milk and honey” and the place where G‑d will fulfill His purpose and promises to the Isrealites. This Torah portion concludes with some of our central prayers.
This parshat is absolutely packed with significant events that took place in the wilderness such as the Golden calf, the 12 spies, Korach’s rebellion, receiving the second set of Tablets with the 10 commandments, and manna from heaven.
