Parashat Acharei Mot

The name of this week’s Torah portion is “Acharei Mot,” which means “after the death of.”  It is found in Leviticus 16:1.  “After the death” refers to the deaths of Aaron’s sons, Nadav and Avihu, and the subsequent understanding.  The incident occurred during the inauguration of the Tabernacle (Mishkan) when Nadav and Avihu offered “unauthorized” fire before the L-rd.  A fire that the L-rd did not request.  The “unauthorized” fire, ZUR means, “to go astray, to turn aside, to be estranged.”  After Aaron’s sons were consumed by a fire from the L-rd, Moses told Aaron that the L-rd said, “I will be sanctified in them that come near to me.”  (Leviticus 10:3)

  • What does unauthorized versus authorized fire have to do with G-d and life versus death?

  • Is there some teaching here that we can apply to our modern daily lives?

  • Is there any significance to this Torah portion occurring now, with Yom HaShoah falling this Sunday evening of May 5th

Please come join us and let’s get into it!
