This week’s Torah portion, Bo, is found in Exodus Chapter 10:1. Bo, meaning “come”, refers to G-d telling Moses to come to Pharaoh. Our story continues with the ongoing saga of the Children of Israel being enslaved in Egypt. Moses has been sent to Pharaoh, by G-d, to free the Hebrews so they can go worship G-d in the wilderness. Meanwhile, G-d has been sending plagues to convince Pharaoh to let His people go. Regardless of Moses’s warnings and the severity of the plagues causing Egyptian suffering, Pharaoh remains largely unmoved. It is interesting, however, that the opening of this Torah portion appears to go against the very theme of freedom that G-d has been endorsing. Exodus Chapter 10:1 states, “And the L-rd said to Moses, ‘Come to Pharaoh; for I have hardened his heart.’”
If G-d already hardened Pharaoh’s heart, why is He telling Moses to “come to Pharaoh”?
What is this telling us about G-d’s role in our lives?
