Parshah Bamidbar and Shavuot

This week’s Torah portion, “Bamidbar,” means “In the wilderness” and is found in Numbers 1:1.  Here, journeying from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land, the Hebrews are encamped by Mount Sinai when G-d tells them to conduct a census, a “raising of the head”, of the twelve tribes of Israel.  Initially, the firstborn sons were to serve in the sanctuary but the Levites were chosen to replace them, since many of the firstborn had participated in the idol worship of the Golden Calf.

Also, in two days (June 1st), we begin the Festival of Shavuot which marks the seven week period after Passover and the anniversary of our receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai.  Shavuot, also called Zeman Matan Torahteinu: The “Time of the Giving of Our Torah”, is a time we celebrate receiving the gift of Torah (which literally means instruction or teaching).  The gift is acknowledging how the Torah guides us in our covenantal relationship with God so we can experience a life of meaning, purpose, peace, joy, and love.
